SENIOR LIVING: We believe every step counts

Residents of Parkland at the Gardens warming up for Body Movin’.

January 29, 2025

Being physically active is scientifically proven to enhance your mental health, no matter how you do it. That’s why the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is encouraging Nova Scotians of all ages to get their Body Movin’!

The organization’s new Body Movin’ campaign is designed to spread joy, laughter and momentum while raising critical funds to support the mental wellness of Nova Scotians.

Residents at a popular Shannex community for older adults are participating. Their mission is simple — raise money and have fun!

“At Parkland at the Gardens, we believe every step counts,” says General Manager, Danielle McCormick. “Our residents embrace daily physical activity, proving that staying active is the key to a vibrant life!”

The team is being captained by resident and 2024 HRM Volunteer Award recipient, Maureen Banyard (and when it comes to fundraising focus - watch out!). Maureen is a staunch supporter of the Foundation who says we can all play a part in eradicating the stigma so often associated with mental illness and addiction.

And she’s right!

People of all ages and abilities are invited to join Nova Scotia's movement for mental health, and you don’t have to be a seasoned athlete to participate. Every movement counts, and when we say every, we really mean it!

A stroll around the park with walking poles, a session of chair yoga, some Tai Chi, playing a game of hide and seek with your grandchildren, or even a dance in your kitchen – it all counts!

“Together we proudly support the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia and Body Movin’, reminding us that at all ages movement is a celebration of life,” says McCormick.

Beyond improving their own mental health, participants will also be helping others at a time when it’s needed most. According to Mental Health Research Canada, more than one in four Canadians say their mental health symptoms affect their daily functioning. The number of people impacted only grows when you consider the families and communities who care for those who are struggling.

By funding mental health and addictions initiatives in communities across the province, the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is dedicated to improving the mental wellness of Nova Scotians. Funded initiatives provide vital programming and services that offer education, peer support, community, connection, treatment and hope to individuals who need support today.

Participants are welcome to register as an individual or as a team with friends, family, coworkers, neighbours, service clubs… you name it. It’s free, it’s fun, and there’s even an opportunity to partner with people who live in other parts of the province or country. Simply visit www.bodymovin.ca or call 902-464-6000 for all the exciting details and remember, every movement makes a difference!
